A SPIRITUAL MOTHER

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6)

Growing up mother would say, “When you are little you step on my toes; but when you are grown you step on my heart.”

In later years she wrote to each of her children and grandchildren: “After the children are grown instead of stepping on your toes and your heart; sometimes they almost cut your heart out.

“After the children are grown, you have to watch what you say to them. Most grown children do not control their tongue. You may want to live their life for them, but you can’t.

“A mother gives birth to a happy, healthy, bouncing baby boy or girl. For the first few days she will hug, pat and caress her little baby. She will rock them back and forth, and say: ‘I love you forever;’ ‘I like you always,’ and ‘as long as I’m living you’ll be my baby.’

“When they are growing up you get angry because of things they might be doing; and you might say, ‘You are driving me crazy.’ When they get to be teenagers they think they are eighteen going on twenty-one. They like loud music and strange clothes. Sometimes, it would be great if you could put them in a barrel, cover up the hold, and let them out when they are twenty-one.”

Then she ended her last letter with verses 44-45 of Ezekiel 16: “Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’ You are your mother’s daughter, loathing husband and children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite” Some today think love can be bought—but it can’t! Love is not sold anywhere.
