JOY OF MEDITATION

“This book of law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

Memory is a treasure. Precious are the memories of good times, good things and good people. No one can experience joy and contentment without our memories of pleasant experiences. Happy is the person who can look back upon a pleasant past, and anticipate a pleasant future. To meditate means to dwell in thought, to muse, to reflect. Sometimes we meditate on happy times and pleasant things that happened in the past. God tells us to meditate on His Word and consider all his ways. Stop and consider God’s wonders (Job 37:14); the heavens (Psalms 8:3), His great love (Psalm 107:43); and consider everything loss compared to your soul (Philippians 3:8).

We read in Matthew 28:19, God promised to be with us always, even to the end of the world, and He has never broken a promise (Joshua 23:14). We should not let our minds dwell on mistakes of the past, but think about the lessons we have learned from mistakes. Think about how much God loves you and the great price He paid, so you can have eternal life.

God told the Israelites to think about all He had done for them. He delivered them from Egyptian bondage to Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey. Count your blessing if you can—“name them one by one.” Remember, Jesus said, “I am going away to prepare a place for you that where I am there you may be also” (John 14:3). In 1 Corinthians 2:9, we read, “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.

Jesus ate the Passover supper with His disciples (Matthew 26:17, 18). This was a memorial of the death angel passing over the Israelites. Today under a new covenant, we, the church, meet together upon the first day of the week in a memorial service in memory of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord.

What a great heritage Christians have—to be called the children of God. Paul said in Philippians 4:8, “if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think on these things.”
