“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are approved by God.” (Romans 13:1 NKJV)

The temptation is strong in these modern times to be disrespectful of authority. Almost daily you can read of graft and corrupted public officials. Sometimes people say, “I just can’t respect this or that official.” Are you perhaps eager to place ‘those in authority’ on a pedestal and then secretly hope they will fall off?

Some people glory in the mistakes of others, but this attitude is far from being a ‘Christian’ attitude. If government leaders stumble and fall, usually there has been some other person behind them, pushing them—ask yourself—Is it I?

“You shall love your neighbor” implies a responsibility for all Christians. As a child of God, you must pray daily that you are not the cause of another to stumble. You must also pray and trust that God, working in the lives of men, will give strength to those who lead and to all who follow.

Pray today for all in authority, especially those who rule over you. Ask God to help them so they may find their way to Him, putting down all evil, upholding and furthering all good that you, being delivered from the fear of your enemies, may serve God in all holiness and righteousness.
