PROVERBS

“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel.” (Proverbs 1:1) Proverbs surely must be one of the greatest books of the Bible. Solomon’s wisdom covers almost every situation that mortal man could ever find himself in. Consider the following examples:

Are you a teenager? Are you sick and tired of hearing mom and dad “preach” to you? Do you wonder why they are doing it? Consider Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (22:6). “A wise son heareth his father’s instruction, But a scorner heareth not rebuke” (13:1). “My son, hear the instruction of thy father and forsake not the law of thy mother” (1:8). Are you a parent? Have you ever seen a mom or dad allow their small child to throw a temper tantrum out in public (or at home) and do absolutely nothing about it? Consider Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs:

“He that spareth his rod hateth his son, but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes” (13:24). “Withhold not correction from the child, for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die” (23:13). “Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell” (23:14). “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame” (29:15).

Have you ever found yourself in what appeared to be the start of a bad argument? Consider Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs:

“A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger” (15:1).

Finally, even the most insignificant comment of Solomon proves to be true. Consider this: the magnificent Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC, compares favorably to a king’s place. Touring it recently, the guide pointed out noticed that a small spider had taken up residence in a corner of one of the elegant ceilings. Consider Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs:

“The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in king’s places” (30:28).

If you appreciate great wisdom, then you will find Proverbs a constant source of joy to read.
