PUPPIES FOR SALE

There was a resounding knock at the door. The man who answered was irritated to see a little boy in patched jeans. Hastening to explain his presence, the boy said, “Sir, I saw your sign, Puppies for Sale, and I want to buy one.”

The man was now more irritated because he was busy, and his puppies were not just puppies—they were pedigree. So, as the man abruptly turned to the boy he curtly said, “Boy, you just don’t understand. You’ll never be able to afford these puppies.”

Struggling, the little boy pulled some money from his pocket and began counting out dollar bills and change. He held it up and said, “I have $5.66.”

The man, now very irritated, rudely said, “Look here boy, these puppies cost hundreds of dollars. You’ll never have enough money to buy one.”

As the man turned to leave, the boy tugged at his shirt and said, “Mister, will $5.66 be enough for me to just see one?” About that time, the mother dog and her little pups came into view and the last one was dragging its hind leg. Without hesitating, the little boy said, “Oh Mister, I want to buy that one.” The man said, “You don’t want that one. No one does. That puppy will never be able to run or jump or play. He’s just not any good. His leg was deformed at birth. He’s not the dog you want, even if you had the money.”

The boy urgently pleaded saying, “Please Mister, I want that one. Please.”

The little boy kept holding his money up and pleading, until the man just couldn’t resist. So he said, “Ok, go ahead and take it.”

The boy gave him $5.66, picked up the puppy, and as he turned to leave, the man curiously said, “Why do you want that puppy so much? After all, he’s no good to anybody.”

Gently holding the crippled puppy with one arm, the little boy reached down and with his free hand and pulled up the jeans covering his left leg, revealing a large and heavy caliber brace. With tears in his eyes, he looked up at the man and said, “Mister, I believe this one’s gonna need somebody that understands him.”
