TAUGHT OF GOD

“It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” (John 6:45 NKJV)

All mankind is ignorant coming into this world. Knowledge is not inherited, it is acquired. The wisest person you know has been taught all he or she knows. The prophet Isaiah (54:13) and Jesus (John 6:45) were both speaking of this idea when they said man should be “taught of God.”

God’s teaching is twofold. The first is without, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge” (Psalm 19:1, 2). You do not need to dwell on the lessons learned from nature, they are all too evident.

The second way God teaches is through His Word. Jesus was the “author and finisher” (Hebrews 12:2) of this source of instruction, and there are warnings attached to violating this source of instruction (2 John 9; Revelation 22:18). In this way spiritual truth can be protected from the corroding influence of human reason.

David, who had the Word, prayed, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” (Psalm 119:18) With the same reverence you should approach the study of God’s Holy Word. It is vain to seek the instruction of God if you are not willing to use the facilities He has given you to be taught of Him.
