CLOSER TO JESUS

The young man said, “I’ve been growing spiritually and have become closer to Jesus.” A thrilling statement: one that brings joy to the hearts of Christians.

But mixed with excitement, came disappointment. This young man moved away before he began to grow in Christ; before his spiritual passion was lit. In fact, his love for Jesus (as well as his desire for spiritual things) was kindled in another religious fellowship.

So, how does one convince him that being right with no passion is better than a passionate faith found where some things are taught incorrectly? A preacher said: “Do it because it’s right.” But does being factually right compare to a living, passionate faith? Will any of us be in any better shape before the throne of God just because we can say, “I knew what was right”? How many of us, with lives lacking passionate and spiritual faith, are willing to stand before God and say that? Is it possible that God’s response might be: “I never knew you”?

There was a time when a hand-shake was as good as a signed contract. Some “old-timers” no doubt proudly remember a time when keeping one’s word was the right thing to do! But isn’t it time for all of us to evaluate the source of our confidence? Are we proud because we know what’s right or have we humbly centered our faith, knowledge, love, passion, and purpose in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?
