COMMUNION

“But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” (1 Corinthians 11:28 NKJV)

There is one person you usually don’t like to look deeply into...yourself! Some people like to stand before mirrors and admire themselves, but few wish to take a close look at their inner life—their secret thoughts, hates, schemes, and lies. Often a person can give a good outward impression to others but God is not satisfied with that because He looks at the heart.

When you partake of the Lord’s Supper, you are called upon to examine yourself in the light of God’s holiness and purity. You don’t want the Lord to look into your heart, while you’re partaking of His Son’s Supper, remembering the terrible death of the Savior, and find secret sins. The purpose of the Lord’s Supper is that Christ might take sin and death out of your life.

Some come to the Lord’s Supper never wanting to give up their secret sin and they, of course, have not yet asked for or received the Lord’s forgiveness. Christ is your Savior because He has taken your sin away—but if you prefer sin to Christ, you will die in your sin.

When you receive the Lord’s Supper, bear in mind that Christ looks into the heart. “As a man thinketh in his heart so he is.”

Pray that God will give you the courage to take a good, close look at yourself. Pray that Almighty God will help you to always be conscious of your thoughts, actions and words. Ask the Lord to forgive you for sinning against Him so often. Be open to Him and confess secret sin to your loving and caring Father in Heaven and be assured of His forgiveness.
