Outline of Hebrews
THE PICTURE GALLERY OF FAITH

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11

FAITH AND ITS NECESSITY (Heb. 11:1-3, 6)
What is faith?
What did it do for the elders?
How were the worlds made? How do we understand this?
What is necessary to please God? (v. 6)

THE EXAMPLE OF ABEL (Heb. 11:4)
Original account in Genesis 4:1-15
Why was Abel’s offering accepted?
How do we know God commanded an animal? (Heb. 11:4; Rom, 10:17)
What does that indicate to you about the spirit of substitution? Can you think of others who had the same spirit?
What did Abel obtain by his offering?

THE EXAMPLE OF NOAH (11:7)
How did Noah build the ark?
What were the results?
Does “by faith” mean by faith only? Did Noah work?
Does “saved by faith” (Eph. 2:8, 9; Rom. 5:1) mean faith alone? What do you think?

THE EXAMPLE OF ABRAHAM AND SARAH (11:8-19)
What did Abraham seek?
What promise did the fathers see afar off? (John 8:56)
Note: Hebrews 11:13 has no reference to the land promise. Joshua said it was fulfilled in his day (Josh. 23:14)
Discuss the offering of Isaac as an act of faith
What country did the fathers seek?

THE EXAMPLE OF MOSES (11:23-29)
By whose faith was Moses hidden?
What did he do when he came to years?
How could Moses “esteem the reproach of Christ” when Christ was not born?
What did he have respect for?
What else did he do by faith?
In all these examples faith includes what?

THE EXAMPLE OF JERICHO (11:30)
Original story found in Joshua 6:1-21
How did Jericho fall?
Was Jericho a gift from God? (Josh. 6:2). Did Joshua’s obedience make it any less a gift?
Our salvation is a gift from God (Eph. 2:8, 9). But a man has to obey God for salvation (Heb. 5:9). Does this make salvation any less a gift?
Baptism is commanded (Acts 10:48). Does obedience to this command nullify faith, eliminate grace or merit salvation?

CONCLUSION
List the victories gained by faith (11:33-35)
List the sufferings endured by faith (11:35-38)
What was obtained through faith?
What was not received by these?
How were they not made perfect without us? (11:40)
